Command clarifies suspect’s nationality, vows transparent investigation
The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that it attempted to facilitate the release of a Lebanese national accused of child defilement, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the report was “inaccurate and capable of misleading the public,” adding that the case is being handled by the Gender Unit with utmost professionalism and strict adherence to due process.
Adebisi clarified that the suspect in question is not a Lebanese, but a citizen of a Southern African country, and assured that the investigation is being conducted with fairness and transparency.
“The command is committed to ensuring justice without bias or interference. The Gender Unit remains dedicated to child protection and due process, regardless of nationality or social status,” she stated.
According to Adebisi, both the child and her biological mother have made statements denying any act of molestation or defilement. She explained that the investigation was initiated following a complaint filed by the child’s father, who rarely had custody of the child.
“The inquiry is being conducted discreetly to prevent a miscarriage of justice, and the findings will be made public upon conclusion,” she added.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a thorough probe into the media allegations and reaffirmed confidence in the leadership of ACP Toyin Kazeem, Officer-in-Charge of the Gender Unit, describing her as “a seasoned and dedicated officer whose leadership has consistently delivered justice for vulnerable persons.”
Jimoh urged the media and members of the public to maintain trust in the police, assuring that the ongoing investigation would be concluded transparently and its outcome made public.
