A 36-year-old realtor, Yinka Agboola, has died after a yet-to-be-identified driver allegedly knocked him down during a dispute over a parking space at Royal Pine Estate on Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Monday evening.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts shared on X, the confrontation began when residents asked the driver to move his vehicle, which was obstructing the road. Although offered an alternative parking space, the driver allegedly became hostile and threatened to kill one of the residents.
As tensions escalated into a scuffle, Agboola, a fellow resident, intervened to calm the situation.
One of the posts stated: “Despite being offered an alternative place to park, he responded to a resident with, ‘Do you know who I am? I will kill you right now.’ When challenged, he became aggressive. The victim, Olayinka Agboola, attempted to intervene.”
Witnesses claimed the suspect then got into his vehicle and began driving forward and reversing in a dangerous manner. Agboola reportedly tried to restrain him, but the driver sped off with the realtor clinging to the steering wheel and eventually knocked him violently against a pavement.
CCTV footage shared online shows a white Mercedes-Benz reversing aggressively toward a group of people and later capturing the moment Agboola was struck.
Residents rushed him to the hospital, where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. Fundraising efforts were initiated by concerned users on X to support his treatment.
However, a follow-up post on Wednesday morning confirmed that Agboola had succumbed to his injuries.
The videos circulating online have intensified calls for law enforcement to locate and arrest the suspect. The vehicle’s number plate has also been shared publicly to aid the search.
Agboola’s sister, Oluwadamilola, confirmed that the case had been reported to the Ajah Police Division, and statements were taken from witnesses. She said the suspect’s whereabouts remained unknown.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, requested that enquiries be sent via text but had yet to respond as of the time of reporting.
The tragic incident underscores rising tensions over parking disputes in residential estates. In April 2023, police arrested a 41-year-old man, Tolulope Olowu, for allegedly stabbing his neighbour to death during a similar altercation over parking in the Badore area of Ajah.
