The Ogun State Police Command has arrested eight persons in connection with an alleged breach of public peace, unlawful assembly, traffic obstruction, and assault on police officers during a disturbance linked to the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba group in parts of Sango-Ota.
The incident occurred on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at Temidire Junction and the Under-Bridge area of Sango-Ota. The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to the police, members of the group allegedly barricaded major roads, set bonfires, and disrupted the free flow of traffic, thereby causing tension in the area. Police officers deployed to maintain law and order were also reportedly attacked.
“On 25th December 2025, Christmas Day, at Temidire Junction and Under-Bridge, Sango-Ota, a group agitating under the aegis of the ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba’ unlawfully barricaded roads, set bonfires, disrupted traffic, and attacked police officers deployed to restore order,” Babaseyi said.
He explained that police operatives were swiftly mobilised to the scene, successfully dispersed the agitators, and arrested eight suspects. Those arrested were identified as Adewale Sosanya (48), Opeyemi Oladotun (31), Zara Gabriel (22), Ajoke Gabriel (19), Adewale Adebomojo (48), Yusuf Tanimowo (40), Olurotimi Ademola (52), and Toyin Gabriel (40).
The police also recovered several exhibits, including a Toyota Dyna vehicle allegedly used to convey the suspects, two broadcast speakers, a carton containing flags and shirts bearing the group’s inscriptions, as well as banners displaying their messages and manifesto.
DSP Babaseyi added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, assured residents of the command’s readiness to maintain peace and security across the state. He warned that the police would not tolerate any act capable of disrupting public order, stressing that attacks on law enforcement officers would be met with firm and decisive action.
The police commissioner also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and to promptly report suspicious activities through the Ogun State Police Command emergency lines.
