Nigeria’s national electricity grid appeared to stall on Monday afternoon as power distribution across the country plunged sharply, with only two electricity distribution companies (DisCos) receiving energy.
Data recorded at 3:12 pm on December 29, 2025, showed that Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company received 30 megawatts (MW), while Abuja DisCo was allocated 20MW. All other DisCos — including Eko, Ikeja, Benin, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Jos and Yola — recorded zero allocation at the time.
The total power wheeled to DisCos nationwide stood at just 50MW, an unusually low figure that suggests a sudden collapse or severe constraint in the national grid’s wheeling capacity.
Industry observers say such sharp drops typically point to system disturbances, transmission bottlenecks, or emergency grid protection measures, although no official explanation had been issued by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) as of press time.
The development raises concerns over potential widespread power outages, particularly in major urban and commercial centres, if the situation persists. Electricity consumers across several states are likely to experience blackouts or severe load shedding pending restoration of normal grid operations.
