The Ogun and Lagos State governments have confirmed the road traffic accident involving British-Nigerian boxing icon and two-time unified world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, describing the incident as a painful tragedy that claimed two lives and left families in mourning.
In a joint statement, the two governments said the accident occurred on Tuesday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when the vehicle conveying Joshua and three other occupants collided with a stationary truck. Two of those in the vehicle lost their lives, a development the authorities said has cast a pall of grief over both states.
Expressing deep sympathy, the governments condoled with the families of the deceased, acknowledging the profound loss and emotional trauma caused by the incident, and offered prayers for strength and comfort as they navigate this difficult time.
According to the statement, Anthony Joshua and another passenger were swiftly evacuated from the crash scene and taken to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. Doctors who conducted multiple clinical assessments confirmed that both are in stable condition and do not require emergency intervention.
The governments noted that a comprehensive medical team has been assembled to closely monitor their recovery, adding that Joshua has been responding well and has remained in contact with his family as he receives care.
Reassuring the public, the Ogun and Lagos State governments said they are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to ensuring that the injured receive the best possible medical attention. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash have also begun.
The governments thanked Nigerians for the outpouring of concern and support, while appealing for privacy for Anthony Joshua and the bereaved families during this period of grief.
