The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, as part of renewed efforts to enhance road safety, strengthen security, and improve vehicle identification across the state.
The approval, granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola. He described the initiative as a proactive and citizen-friendly measure aimed at encouraging compliance while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners.
Muri-Okunola noted that the condition of vehicle number plates is critical to effective traffic management, crime detection, and overall public safety, stressing that faded or illegible plates hinder the work of law enforcement and traffic officials.
“Clear and properly maintained number plates are essential for vehicle identification and security. This three-month rebate is designed to give motorists ample opportunity to replace faded plates at a reduced cost while supporting our collective responsibility to keep Lagos roads safe and well-regulated,” he said.
According to him, the rebate applies specifically to vehicle owners whose number plates have become worn or unclear due to prolonged use and weather conditions. Affected motorists are advised to visit the MVAA One Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA station across the state to process the replacement.
He added that the initiative aligns with the state government’s approach of balancing enforcement with empathy, promoting voluntary compliance through incentives rather than penalties.
Beyond aesthetics, Muri-Okunola explained that legible and standardised number plates play a vital role in curbing traffic violations, aiding investigations, and supporting the state’s digital vehicle tracking and security systems.
He assured motorists of seamless service delivery throughout the rebate period and cautioned against the use of unauthorised agents, emphasising that all replacements must be carried out at government-approved centres.
The Lagos State Government, he reiterated, remains committed to policies that prioritise safety, convenience, and accountability, while calling on residents to cooperate in building a safer and more orderly transport system.
