The Akran of Badagry in Lagos State, Oba Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89.

It was gathered that the revered traditional ruler died on Monday, January 12, 2026. Details surrounding his death were yet to be made public as of the time of filing this report, with the Akran Palace expected to issue an official statement.

Born on September 18, 1936, the late monarch was a former journalist who ascended the throne on April 23, 1977. He reigned for nearly five decades, during which he became a symbol of unity and stability in the ancient Badagry Kingdom.

Oba Menu-Toyi I also served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, where his counsel and leadership earned him widespread respect across the state.

Widely regarded as a lover of his people, the monarch was known for promoting peace and championing community development throughout the Badagry area during his long and largely peaceful reign.
