The Lagos State Government has confirmed that no casualties were recorded following the partial collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu.
In an official update on Friday, the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) said it received the news of the incident with shock and described it as unfortunate. The committee, however, disclosed that the affected classroom block had already been identified and marked for demolition prior to the collapse, as part of plans to replace it with a more suitable structure.
According to the SCRPS, the proposed redevelopment was aimed at providing a befitting classroom edifice capable of accommodating the growing student population of the school.
The state government assured parents and the public that all students are safe and in good condition, stressing that the incident did not result in any injury or loss of life.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the immediate relocation of pupils to nearby schools to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption.
The SCRPS also announced that a team of its officials would visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment of the incident. The visit, the committee said, would help fast-track modalities for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block to serve the school’s needs.
The government reiterated its commitment to improving public school infrastructure across the state in line with its education development agenda.
