A traffic officer of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) has been hospitalised following a violent attack by a commercial bus driver at the Ojota Interchange area of Lagos.
The incident occurred over the weekend when LASTMA officials intercepted a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus, with registration number EKY 693 YK, for violating traffic regulations along the Ojota–Ketu corridor. The vehicle was reportedly operating with its passenger door left open while fully loaded with commuters, an action authorities described as dangerous to public safety.
According to LASTMA, the driver resisted arrest and attempted to flee by driving onto the median in a bid to escape enforcement officers. The attempt failed after the vehicle became immobilised. Officials said the driver then became violent and attacked the officers with a broken bottle, injuring one of them on the hand before fleeing the scene.
The injured officer was immediately taken to a medical facility, where he received emergency treatment, including surgery on his fingers. He is currently under close medical supervision and responding to care.
Despite the suspect’s escape, the offending vehicle was impounded by the authorities in line with statutory regulations. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the police working to apprehend the driver.
Reacting to the attack, the General Manager of LASTMA, , strongly condemned the assault, describing it as an affront to lawful authority and public order. He confirmed that the matter has been referred to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.
Bakare-Oki also warned commercial transport operators against noncompliance with traffic laws, stressing that the agency would continue to intensify enforcement efforts to ensure safety and order on Lagos roads.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining traffic discipline and free flow of movement across the state, noting that acts of violence against its officers would be met with firm legal action.
