Some personnel of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday reportedly assaulted a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver while he was carrying out his duties on the dedicated BRT lane along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
The incident occurred around Palmgrove, where eyewitnesses said the driver was lawfully operating within the BRT corridor when he was intercepted and physically attacked by the soldiers, allegedly without provocation.
An eyewitness described the assault as oppressive, noting that the driver did not violate any traffic rules and was simply maintaining his designated lane at the time of the confrontation. Photographs circulating online reportedly show the military personnel involved in the incident.
The development has sparked anger among commuters and residents, who are calling on the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to take decisive action to protect its staff from harassment by security personnel.
Many argue that such actions threaten the safety and efficiency of public transportation and demean essential workers who keep the city moving.
The incident has also revived concerns over recurring clashes between military personnel and civilian transport workers in Lagos, particularly over alleged violations of dedicated BRT lanes.
As of the time of reporting, neither the Nigerian Army nor LAMATA had issued an official statement on the incident or confirmed whether a formal complaint had been filed.
