No fewer than six people were killed and three others injured on Tuesday following a fatal road accident involving a truck at the Ilo-Awela axis of the Toll Gate area along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) confirmed the incident through its Ota Divisional Commander, Mr Salau Hammed, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota.
According to Hammed, the crash occurred at about 9:55 a.m. and involved a truck, a tricycle, and nine individuals. An eyewitness account indicated that the truck, travelling from the Ilo-Awela area toward the Toll Gate, reportedly lost control due to brake failure before crashing into the tricycle, other vehicles, and pedestrians.
“Six deaths were recorded, comprising five males and one female, while three other persons sustained critical injuries,” Hammed said.
He added that the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary of Ifo General Hospital, while the injured victims were taken to Ota General Hospital for medical treatment.
Hammed noted that efforts were ongoing to clear the wreckage from the highway, with TRACE officials and other security agencies deployed to manage traffic and restore normalcy.
He also urged motorists to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before using the roads.
