The Lagos State Police Command has arrested officers allegedly involved in the accidental shooting of two passersby in the Alagbado area of Lagos on Friday. The incident, which has sparked public concern, is now under investigation on the directive of the Commissioner of Police.
Some police officers have been taken into custody following what authorities described as an “unfortunate shooting incident” that resulted in the death of two civilians in Alagbado, Lagos State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter. He also directed the immediate detention of the officers involved.
According to reports, the officers were pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, popularly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” in the area when gunshots were fired, allegedly striking two unsuspecting passersby.
In a statement shared on X, the police spokesperson said the officers connected to the incident have been arrested and are currently in custody. He added that the Commissioner of Police has mandated adequate deployment of personnel to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the community.
An eyewitness account circulating on social media alleged that the officers, said to be attached to the AIT Division Police Station, were on stop-and-search duty before the shooting occurred. The witness claimed the officers fled the scene immediately after the gunshots, leaving the victims without assistance.
Police authorities, however, assured residents that calm has been restored to the area and that justice will be served. The outcome of the investigation, they said, will be made public.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Lagos, following recent cult-related clashes in areas including Iyana-Ipaja, Aboru, Badore, Olokonla, Onipanu, and Satellite Town, where multiple casualties have been recorded in recent weeks.
