Badagry was plunged into mourning on Monday morning following a tragic accident at the busy Badagry Roundabout along the Badagry–Seme Expressway that claimed three lives.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of February 23, 2026, when a truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending toward Seme. Eyewitnesses said the driver repeatedly sounded the horn and signaled to other road users as the vehicle sped uncontrollably.
In an apparent bid to prevent a larger catastrophe, the driver rammed into the roundabout’s garden fence in an attempt to slow down. The effort, however, proved unsuccessful as the truck ploughed into a commercial motorcycle carrying two passengers and struck a traffic officer who was on duty at the roundabout.
The traffic officer, the motorcycle rider, and one passenger were feared dead at the scene, leaving residents and commuters in shock.
Emergency responders and security personnel swiftly arrived to cordon off the area, evacuate victims, and ease the heavy gridlock that built up along the expressway.
As of press time, authorities had yet to issue an official statement confirming the precise cause of the accident. The incident has reignited concerns over safety standards for heavy-duty vehicles operating along the corridor, a critical international route linking Nigeria to neighboring West African countries.
