Repair works on Kara Bridge along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway will resume fully on Wednesday, the Federal Government has announced.

The rehabilitation exercise was temporarily suspended on Saturday following severe gridlock around the axis. However, the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Layi Komolafe, confirmed on Monday that work will recommence on March 4, 2026.

Komolafe stressed that replacing the expansion joints on the Kara Bridge outward Lagos is compulsory and cannot be delayed.

“I am formally informing the public and seeking the cooperation of all stakeholders, especially FRSC Lagos, the Lagos State Police Command, and the Lagos State Ministry of Transport (LASTMA), to effectively manage traffic as we resume full operations on this section,” he said.

He noted that the expected traffic congestion would largely impact motorists within Lagos and appealed to road users to comply with traffic directives during the period.

Despite the announcement, some uncertainty remains. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated that the repairs may not restart as scheduled.

Earlier, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ganiyu Hamzat, disclosed that the rehabilitation of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is projected to last between six weeks and two months, depending on the time required for certain sections to properly seal.

Hamzat explained that damaged portions of the road have contributed to avoidable accidents, as motorists attempting to dodge bad spots often collide with other vehicles.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, linking Lagos, the nation’s commercial hub, to the South-East, South-South, and other parts of the country.
