An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday after complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. She has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road.
Her death comes barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who served in the same local government area, died under unclear circumstances.
Reports indicate that Ariyo’s death has raised serious allegations against Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South. He is accused of having a romantic relationship with the deceased, with claims that the relationship resulted in the pregnancy and its eventual termination.
A police source confirmed that Olalekan is currently being held at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Eleweran. The source also raised concerns over the appropriateness of a relationship between an official and a corps member under his supervision.
Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the case is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department but declined to comment on the arrest or specific allegations.
The NYSC in Ogun State has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
