The All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly making moves to adopt consensus candidates for the 2027 governorship elections in the South-West, with Obafemi Hamzat, Olamilekan Adeola, and Sharafadeen Alli emerging as leading choices in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states respectively.
The development followed a high-level meeting between party stakeholders from the three states and President Bola Tinubu in Lagos. The meeting, held after Eid-el-Fitr celebrations hosted by the President, focused on strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources familiar with the discussions disclosed that the selection of the trio was reached after extensive deliberations, taking into account their popularity and acceptability within party ranks. The meeting reportedly included key figures such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and governors including Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun.
The party is said to be favouring a consensus approach in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, which allows political parties to adopt candidates through agreement rather than direct primaries. The strategy is aimed at avoiding internal divisions and strengthening the party’s chances in the elections.
However, the move has not been without resistance. In Lagos, several aspirants are still in contention, including former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Speaker of the State Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, and Senator Tokunbo Abiru. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, is also reportedly lobbying for the ticket.
In Ogun State, Adeola’s emergence is said to be at variance with the preference of Governor Abiodun, who is believed to be backing another aspirant. Political dynamics involving former governors Olusegun Osoba and Ibikunle Amosun are also expected to influence the final outcome.
In Oyo State, Alli appears to enjoy broader acceptance among party stakeholders and influential figures, including Rashidi Ladoja. His candidacy is seen as a unifying option amid internal divisions within the state chapter of the party.
Sources also indicated that the party may adopt a compensation strategy to placate other aspirants. In Oyo, for instance, a Senate ticket is being considered for Remi Oseni as part of efforts to maintain party cohesion.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, while governorship and state assembly elections are set for February 6. Party primaries are expected to hold between April and May 2026.
While consultations are ongoing, party leaders are said to be working towards finalising arrangements that would ensure unity and electoral success in the South-West region.
