A young man rescued from an attempted jump into the lagoon at the Third Mainland Bridge has reportedly expressed anger over being saved.
The incident occurred near the University of Lagos waterfront on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was stopped just moments before he could leap.
According to the police, members of the Agbekoya Society of Nigeria, led by its President General, Aare Kamorudeen Okikiola, carried out the rescue. The group was returning from a courtesy visit to Assistant Inspector General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, at the Zone 2 Command headquarters in Onikan when they noticed the man behaving suspiciously at the edge of the bridge.
Alarmed by the situation, the convoy stopped immediately. The group acted swiftly, restraining the man before he could jump into the lagoon.
Aare Kamorudeen described the intervention as a divine opportunity to save a life, noting that their mission includes protecting lives and supporting community policing efforts.
Following the rescue, the man was handed over to the Berger Pin-down unit of the Bariga Police Division. He has since been taken for medical and psychological evaluation.
Police sources disclosed that the man appeared upset about being rescued, allegedly insisting he would have preferred to die due to his personal condition. Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess his mental health.
