WhatsApp is testing a new optional subscription service, dubbed “WhatsApp Plus” or “WhatsApp Premium,” for Android beta users in select markets, including Nigeria, as its parent company explores new revenue streams.

The proposed paid tier, still in its trial phase, is expected to cost a modest monthly fee, though pricing has not been officially confirmed and may vary by region. Early indications suggest it could be offered at a relatively low rate to encourage adoption among users seeking additional features.

According to reports, the subscription focuses on non-essential enhancements, particularly around personalization and chat management. These include custom app themes, expanded chat pinning options, and improved chat organization tools designed for users who handle a high volume of daily conversations.

Despite the introduction of premium features, WhatsApp’s core services — including messaging, voice and video calls, and end-to-end encryption — will remain free for all users.

The development is especially significant in Nigeria, where WhatsApp plays a central role in personal communication and small business operations. Analysts say the move signals a gradual shift toward monetizing advanced features without disrupting the platform’s widespread accessibility.

The test is currently limited to a small group of Android beta users, with no official timeline announced for a broader rollout. However, it reflects a broader strategy to diversify income sources beyond advertising, similar to initiatives seen across other platforms.

WhatsApp previously experimented with a subscription-based model in its early years before transitioning to a free service, making this latest test a potential return to paid offerings — albeit in a more optional and feature-driven format.
