The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly plotting the kidnapping of his aunt, who raised him from childhood.

Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said the suspect paid a total of N900,000 to individuals he believed were kidnappers, highlighting the premeditated nature of the plan.

According to police findings, Destiny lived with his aunt for about 10 years—from age five to 15—before cutting off contact. His alleged attempt to target her has sparked concern over rising cases of betrayal involving close family members.

Investigators revealed that the suspect made two payments—an initial N200,000 deposit followed by N700,000—to facilitate the planned abduction. However, the plot collapsed when the individuals he approached turned out not to be kidnappers. Instead, they apprehended him and handed him over to authorities.

During interrogation, Destiny reportedly confessed but claimed he could not explain his motive, attributing his actions to external influence.

The suspect, a married father of two, said he runs a haulage and building materials business and used proceeds from his work to fund the failed plan.

The victim expressed shock upon learning of the plot, noting that Destiny had long distanced himself from the family. She insisted that the law should take its full course.

Police confirmed the suspect remains in custody with the Raiders squad as investigations continue.
