What began as a viral rumour on social media has escalated into a legal crackdown, as the United Bank for Africa (UBA) takes firm action over a false report alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, had divorced his wife Vivian.

In an official statement, the bank described the claim and similar online publications as entirely fabricated, malicious, and intended to mislead the public while inflicting reputational damage. UBA stressed that the report has no factual basis and should be disregarded.

Going beyond a routine denial, the bank confirmed that it has referred the matter to law enforcement authorities. Three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the creation and spread of the false information. They were identified as Mr. Kingsley Akunemeihe, Mr. Chigozie Success Ihebom, and Mr. John Surpruchi Nwanorue. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities expected to pursue additional suspects involved in originating or amplifying the claims.

UBA also issued a directive to individuals and platforms circulating the content to immediately cease dissemination and remove the material. It further urged those involved to preserve all relevant digital records, including communications and metadata, pending legal proceedings.

The bank warned that failure to comply could lead to lawsuits, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, and damages under applicable laws.

The incident underscores a broader shift in how major institutions are tackling misinformation—moving swiftly from rebuttal to enforcement, and signalling a growing willingness to pursue legal consequences for digital falsehoods.
