The Federal Government has awarded the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos to CCECC following the discovery of serious structural defects on the existing bridge.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed that the project, valued at N545 billion, will feature a modern bridge design aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and long-term durability. He said the new bridge is expected to be completed within 36 months.

According to Umahi, comprehensive assessments showed that constructing a new bridge would be more economical and sustainable than carrying out extensive repairs on the current structure. He added that funding for the project would come from a combination of government resources and external financing arrangements.

The minister assured Nigerians that the project would be subjected to strict supervision and monitoring to guarantee quality delivery, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure across the country.

Meanwhile, Umahi also announced that one carriageway of the Eko Bridge will be shut from May 10 to allow for emergency repair works after sections of the bridge were damaged by illegal sand mining activities around the area.

He said urgent intervention had become necessary to safeguard motorists and prevent further deterioration of the bridge infrastructure.
