The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled two illegal alcoholic beverage production facilities in the Mushin area of Lagos, arresting two suspected counterfeiters during separate enforcement operations.
The suspects, identified as Uchenna Ekezie and Peter Okparalgbo, were apprehended by operatives of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.
Among the counterfeit products recovered were fake bottles of Hennessy, William Lawson’s, Don Julio, Martell, Rémy Martin, Flirt Vodka, Lords Gin, Imperial Blue, Gordon’s, Jack Daniel’s, Best Whisky, Eagle Gin, Aman Tequila, The Macallan Scotch Whisky, Casmero Whisky, 501 and Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
NAFDAC also seized large quantities of empty bottles, labels, packaging materials and other equipment used in the illicit production of the fake alcoholic drinks.
The Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shaba Mohammed Iluyomade, said both suspects confessed during interrogation to producing the counterfeit beverages. He added that all recovered products and production materials had been secured as exhibits while investigations continue ahead of prosecution.
In a separate operation, the agency uncovered more than 450 cartons of expired salad cream stored at two locations in Oke Arin Market, Lagos. The products, some of which expired as far back as 2024, were immediately evacuated to prevent their sale to unsuspecting consumers.
Iluyomade also disclosed that on July 15, 2026, the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted Chidera Chukwuka on a six-count charge before Justice Allagoa. The court imposed a total fine of ₦1.65 million and ordered the forfeiture of all offending products to NAFDAC for destruction.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to public health, Iluyomade said the operations demonstrate NAFDAC’s resolve to disrupt the production and distribution of counterfeit and unsafe regulated products.
He urged Nigerians to buy regulated products only from reputable outlets and report suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office, assuring that surveillance and enforcement operations would continue nationwide in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and law enforcement agencies.
