The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has disclosed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a formal agreement to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on during a television programme on Monday, Kwankwaso said the written agreement was central to the alliance that produced the NDC ticket and would ensure the presidency rotates back to northern Nigeria in 2031.
He expressed confidence that Obi would honour the pact, describing the former Anambra State governor as a trustworthy and committed leader.
According to Kwankwaso, his perception of Obi changed after the 2023 elections, adding that both leaders discovered they shared similar visions for Nigeria after comparing their policy blueprints, making it easy to work together.
Obi has repeatedly maintained that he would serve only one term if elected, saying the commitment aligns with the principle of power rotation and is intended to promote national unity, fairness and political stability rather than personal political ambition.
