The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote inclusion, improve accessibility and enhance ease of mobility across the state.
The proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored collaboration on the development and implementation of the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant step towards actualising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
He said the specialised number plates would improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities across the state while reinforcing the principles of inclusive governance.
Muri-Okunola disclosed that the agency had already begun discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed number plates and would commence the necessary administrative processes in collaboration with LASODA to ensure the initiative is successfully implemented.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the visit was aimed at initiating strategic discussions on the introduction of specialised vehicle number plates designed to meet the needs of persons with disabilities in Lagos State.
She explained that the initiative would cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.
According to her, the specialised number plates would improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community while strengthening the government’s commitment to building a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are recognised, respected and able to participate fully in all aspects of life.
Oyetunde-Lawal called on all stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility and support policies that advance the rights, welfare and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the initiative, noting that it aligns with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior management staff of LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
