Unity colleges delay resumption over King’s College concession
Resumption has been delayed across the 155 Federal Government-owned unity colleges following opposition to the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to its Old Boys Association.
Parents and guardians reportedly kept their children and wards at home on Monday, leaving the colleges largely deserted as the new academic session began.
The development followed the Federal Government’s decision to concession Kings College, a move that has attracted opposition from parents and other stakeholders.
Speaking with Vanguard, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of Unity Colleges in the South-West, Ayopo Somefun, said the schools would remain shut until the Federal Government reverses the concession.
Somefun warned that if the concession of Kings College is allowed to stand, the policy could eventually be extended to other unity colleges.
He argued that such a development would undermine the purpose for which the Federal Government established the unity schools.
He said parents would continue to withhold their children from the schools until the government addresses their concerns.
