The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed its members nationwide to immediately inspect their fuel dispensing meters following a warning by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over under-dispensing of petroleum products.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said the association held an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday after receiving the regulator’s warning, with members instructed to urgently check the accuracy of their dispensing equipment.
Gillis-Harry explained that prolonged use could cause dispensing meters to malfunction, resulting in either under-dispensing or over-dispensing of fuel.
He assured motorists that PETROAN members would ensure customers receive the quantity displayed on the pumps.
The PETROAN president also urged motorists to monitor the quantities displayed on dispensing meters, insist on collecting receipts and know the capacity of their vehicle’s fuel tank to help detect discrepancies.
According to him, PETROAN works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the NMDPRA to ensure that fuel dispensing meters remain functional, accurate and properly calibrated.
The NMDPRA had warned filling station operators against short-changing consumers through inaccurate dispensing meters, stressing that outlets found under-dispensing petroleum products could face sanctions, including the revocation of their operating licences.
Gillis-Harry said PETROAN had taken the warning seriously and was working with its members to identify and rectify faulty dispensing equipment.
