The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, urging Nigerians to find and begin using their new digital postcodes.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on Thursday, saying the system would make it easier to identify locations and connect people and businesses to services and opportunities.
Operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, the system assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.
The GIS-enabled codes identify locations across five levels — state, local government area, district, area and building — providing a precise reference for each address.
Tijani said the system would help businesses reach customers, enable families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and support government agencies in delivering essential services.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.
He added that accurate postcodes would provide part of the digital infrastructure required to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1tn economy.
“As we work towards President Bola Tinubu’s ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.
The minister urged Nigerians to search for their postcodes on the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, and share them with family, friends and businesses.
According to NIPOST, the digital postcode system is expected to improve deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standardised reference for locations.
