The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions in Lagos State-owned universities has threatened an immediate and indefinite strike if the state government fails to meet its demands by midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026.

The unions issued the ultimatum at a press conference held at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo Campus.

JAC comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions (NASU).

The affected institutions are LASU, Lagos State University of Education, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and Lagos State University College of Medicine.

Chairman of JAC and ASUU-LASU, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, said the unions had exhausted all avenues of dialogue over the implementation of the 2026 agreements between the Federal Government and university staff unions.

According to him, a technical committee comprising representatives of the state government and JAC reached an agreement on the implementation of various allowances on August 18.

The agreed terms, he said, included a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance for ASUU and 35 per cent allowances for SSANU and NASU.

Bakare said JAC was demanding immediate executive approval and implementation of the signed 2026 agreements without alteration or further delay.

The unions are also demanding payment of nine months’ arrears, non-taxation of applicable allowances and implementation of the 15 per cent Lagos factor.

Other outstanding demands include the implementation of a 20 per cent salary increase and the release of five Marcopolo buses previously promised to the state-owned universities.

Bakare said the unions had repeatedly opted for dialogue despite the challenges, but warned that their patience had now been exhausted.

“Our patience has been pushed to the absolute limit,” he said.

He warned that failure by the Lagos State Government to act before the deadline would trigger “an immediate, total and indefinite strike” across the state-owned universities.

Bakare appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, parents and students to intervene and urge the government to resolve the issues before the deadline.
