The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, has detained a dismissed operative over alleged impersonation and extortion of motorists and traders.

The chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the Task Force spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan.

Akerele said the suspect was apprehended at Oshodi bus stop following the circulation of a viral video showing his arrest.

According to him, the suspect, a former paramilitary operative, was dismissed several months ago over alleged misconduct, including theft, use of a fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, and indiscipline.

He alleged that despite his dismissal, the suspect continued to impersonate a serving Task Force official.

The chairman explained that operatives approached the suspect for questioning, but he allegedly rejected the invitation and resisted arrest before he was eventually apprehended through tactical coordination and minimal force.

Akerele stressed that the suspect was no longer affiliated with the agency, warning that impersonation by dismissed personnel could mislead members of the public and undermine confidence in legitimate law enforcement operations.

He said the arrest demonstrated the agency’s determination to prevent unauthorised individuals from exploiting its identity and authority for unlawful activities.

The suspect, according to Akerele, would be arraigned in court on Monday after the completion of investigations.

He urged residents to verify the identities of individuals claiming to be Task Force officials and report suspicious activities through the appropriate channels.

The chairman also appealed to journalists to verify allegations and seek responses from relevant parties before publication to ensure balanced and responsible reporting.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting residents and preventing the abuse of its name and authority.
