The Lagos State Government has announced plans to shut down the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, (inbound Marina-CMS Bridge) for emergency repairs. The closure, scheduled to last from March 19 to May 26, 2025, will affect the section of the road from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to Independence Bridge.
To mitigate the impact on traffic, the state government has designated alternative routes for motorists. Those heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way will be diverted through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, and Falomo Roundabout. Motorists traveling to the 3rd Mainland Bridge will take a similar route, linking up with Alfred Rewane Road and Osborne Road.
Additionally, motorists heading to Inner Marina and CMS will be diverted through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue and Falomo Roundabout, while those traveling from Inner Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way will have through-traffic access.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will manage traffic flow along the designated routes during the closure. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has urged motorists to be patient and cooperative during the repair works, which are part of the federal government’s efforts to rehabilitate the asphalt pavement of the road sections.
