Ebuka Obi, founder of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, has denied allegations that he is responsible for the continued detention of controversial blogger Chizorom Ofoegbu, publicly known as “Ijele Speaks.”
Obi’s legal team addressed a press conference in Lagos, refuting claims that the church or its spiritual leader played a role in obstructing Ofoegbu’s release after he was granted bail in mid-2024.
Background of the Case
– Initial Arrest: Ofoegbu was arrested following a petition filed by Obi at the Federal High Court in Lagos, citing alleged threats to his life.
– Bail Conditions: The court granted bail on June 14, 2024, but Ofoegbu initially failed to meet the conditions, prompting a formal application to vary the bail terms, which was subsequently approved.
Separate Case Leading to Detention
– Defamation and Cyberstalking: Prosecutors revealed that Ofoegbu is being held due to a separate case involving allegations of defamation and cyberstalking brought against him by another religious leader, Victor Onukaogu, founder of Living Christ Mission.
– Ongoing Case: This case is currently before the High Court in Awka, Anambra State, and is unrelated to the complaint filed by Obi.
Church’s Stance
– Denial of Involvement: Obi’s legal team emphasized that their client had merely acted within his constitutional rights by reporting a perceived threat to law enforcement and had no hand in Ofoegbu’s continued detention.
– Warning Against False Reports: The church warned that legal action may be taken against individuals or platforms involved in spreading falsehoods, urging the public to rely on verified court records and facts.
