The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a sophisticated drug trafficking operation involving cocaine concealed inside traditional Nigerian ceremonial wear — specifically male caps known as fila and female headgears called gele, often worn as part of aso-ebi attire during social events.

The revelation was announced on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. He posted images and a video of the seized items, warning Nigerians to be extremely cautious when asked to transport clothing abroad on behalf of others.

“In case you’re asked to help take as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere any aso-ebi fila and gele (traditional male cap and female headgear), the latest seizure of cocaine concealed in such materials uncovered by #ndlea_nigeria will make you think twice,” Babafemi wrote.

This latest bust is part of a broader crackdown by the NDLEA on creative smuggling tactics. It comes on the heels of several other major discoveries, including the interception of an oil tanker that had been secretly modified with a hidden compartment for transporting illegal drugs across Nigeria.

The agency has reiterated its commitment to thwarting drug trafficking and has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
