FG declares Thursday as public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Congratulating Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the Minister described June 12 as a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards a just and prosperous society.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future is assured,” he said. “The past 26 years tell a story of our resilience, strength, and courage — and a hope renewed more than ever.”

While acknowledging that democracy is an evolving system open to continuous improvement, the Minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to upholding democratic values anchored on the freely-expressed will of the people.

He emphasized that Nigeria remains steadfast in its pursuit of a political, economic, social, and cultural order shaped by the people and for the people.
