A better commuting experience awaits Lagosians as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled three new sets of coaches for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line on Sunday. The event took place at the National Arts Theatre Station, with the Governor acknowledging the pivotal support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in realizing the expansion.
The new coaches—each set comprising four cars—were imported from China by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) in partnership with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The addition will double the operational capacity of the Blue Line, reducing journey times and improving service frequency.
Sanwo-Olu credited the Federal Government’s support, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy, which has encouraged states to explore alternative transport solutions.
“The funding and expansion of the Blue Line have been made possible by President Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope Agenda has backed sub-national initiatives like ours,” he said.
The Governor added that the improved operations would enhance predictability, reliability, and passenger comfort, with the potential for trains arriving every 10 minutes.
Sanwo-Olu also announced the upcoming delivery of new trains for the Red Line, which runs from Agbado to Ebute Metta. These coaches will be larger to accommodate higher passenger volumes.
Construction on the second phase of the Blue Line, extending to Okokomaiko, is progressing steadily, with stations and tracks taking shape.
The Lagos Blue Line, inaugurated in January 2023 and operational since September 2023, has transported over two million passengers. In August 2024, daily trips increased from 54 to 72, cutting travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from 30 to 18 minutes.
