The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed the issuance of a directive to all its branches across the country to withdraw their services following the federal government’s delay in the payment of June 2025 salaries.
This action is in line with the union’s “No Pay, No Work” resolution, which mandates members to down tools if salaries are not paid within three days of the due date.
Already, ASUU branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have commenced strike actions in compliance with the directive.
ASUU President, Prof Chris Piwuna, who confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja, explained that the action is a direct enforcement of a resolution reached by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC). According to him, the NEC had resolved that members would automatically suspend academic services whenever salary payments are delayed beyond three days.
Prof Piwuna decried the nonchalant attitude of government officials towards lecturers’ welfare, describing the withheld salaries as meagre yet essential for survival.
He also highlighted the financial hardships lecturers have faced since the federal government transitioned university workers from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), a change that has allegedly worsened delays in salary payments.
