Lagos State is set to unveil an ambitious 20-year strategic blueprint for traffic management, aimed at addressing the growing challenges of urbanisation and increasing vehicular activity.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, made this known during a press conference on Wednesday, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

According to Giwa, the new blueprint will reposition LASTMA for future demands by enhancing its systems through smart governance, participatory policymaking, and digital innovation.

“The theme of this year’s celebration—‘Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations’—reflects our commitment to improving mobility while aligning with global best practices,” he said.

Giwa reaffirmed LASTMA’s core mandate of ensuring safer roads, enforcing traffic laws, and improving the commuting experience in Lagos. He emphasized that traffic management is a shared civic responsibility, not an adversarial task.

“This silver jubilee is more than a celebration—it is a moment of introspection, recognition of milestones, and recommitment to excellence in public service,” he noted.

Highlighting LASTMA’s achievements over the past 25 years, Giwa pointed to strides in digital transformation, professional development, emergency response, public advocacy, and inter-agency collaboration. He added that LASTMA’s operational footprint has expanded significantly, with over 4,000 officers now deployed across the state.

“From inception in 2000, LASTMA has evolved into a critical force in Lagos’ urban transportation ecosystem. It is no longer a mere intervention agency—it has become a model for traffic management, emulated across Nigeria and studied internationally,” he said.

As part of the anniversary activities, Giwa announced that the second Lagos Traffic Conference will be held on July 15 at Eko Hotels and Suites. The event will gather policymakers, transport experts, academics, and civic leaders to explore innovative solutions to Lagos’ mobility challenges.

“We are using this moment to not only reflect on past progress but to issue a clarion call for visionary and collaborative action moving forward,” Giwa said.

Also speaking, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reassured Lagosians of a more efficient and technologically-driven traffic management system in the years ahead.

“Looking into the future, our focus is on digital transformation and data-driven planning. Within the next two years, we intend to fully integrate smart technologies into our operations,” Bakare-Oki stated.

With this long-term strategic plan, Lagos is positioning itself to remain ahead of urban mobility challenges, reaffirming its commitment to building a more efficient, safer, and smarter transportation ecosystem.
