Mamman Daura, the influential nephew and longtime confidant of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has been hospitalised in London, United Kingdom.

Vice President Kashim Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2025. The statement was released to provide clarity on the vice president’s visit to London following Buhari’s death.

According to Nkwocha, Daura is currently receiving treatment at a London hospital and is said to be recuperating.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, upon arrival in London, met with and condoled with the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.

“The Vice President also visited the late president’s nephew, Malam Mamman Daura, who is recuperating in a London hospital.”

The visit, Nkwocha added, took place while Shettima awaits the completion of necessary documentation for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.

Shettima was accompanied by key government officials, including Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum; Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar; and Deputy Chief of Staff to the President Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.

Mamman Daura, widely regarded as one of the most powerful figures behind the scenes during Buhari’s presidency, was often described as a central figure in the so-called “Buhari cabal.” His influence over state affairs was a subject of public debate, with former First Lady Aisha Buhari among those who openly criticised the group’s perceived sway over the presidency.

President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
