Suspended Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday attempted to resume her legislative duties but was initially denied access to the National Assembly complex by security operatives. She later disembarked form her car and walked into the complex.

The senator, who had publicly vowed to return to the red chambers despite her ongoing suspension, arrived at the National Assembly at exactly 12:20 p.m., accompanied by several supporters, including activist Aisha Yesufu.

In anticipation of her arrival, security presence at the complex was significantly heightened. Armed personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and the Sergeant-at-Arms were stationed at key entry points. Their primary objective appeared to be preventing Akpoti-Uduaghan from gaining entry.

The increased security checks led to a long queue of vehicles and noticeable delays at the main entrance of the parliament building.

Despite her claims of legal backing to resume, the Senate has maintained its stance, reiterating that no court order currently compels it to lift her suspension. This position was reaffirmed for the third time by Senate Spokesperson Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, who issued a statement on Sunday dismissing the senator’s interpretation of a recent court ruling.

“This clarification becomes necessary following circulating claims by the suspended senator that she intends to resume at the Senate on Tuesday,” Adaramodu stated. “Her claim is based on a misinterpretation of the recent judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

As of now, the Senate insists that Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan remains under valid suspension pending further internal decisions.
