The Lagos State Government has directed newly inaugurated chairmen of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to suspend all political appointments, except for the position of Chief of Staff.

This directive was contained in a memo dated July 31, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa. The memo reaffirms the instruction issued by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the swearing-in ceremony of the council executives.

According to the memo, chairmen are to refrain from appointing Supervisors, Special Advisers, or Senior Special Assistants until further notice from the state government.

“I am to reiterate that the appointment of the Chief of Staff is the only appointment approved/permissible as you assume office, while other appointments should be stepped down until further directive,” the memo stated.

The Permanent Secretary further instructed that any appointments already made—apart from that of the Chief of Staff—must be reversed.

The directive is believed to be part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s effort to streamline governance at the local level and ensure proper coordination before a full political structure is instituted.
