The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
Announcing the release at a press briefing in Lagos, the head of WAEC’s Nigeria office, Amos Josiah Dangut, disclosed that the examination held from April 24 to June 20, 2025.
According to Dangut, a total of 1,973,365 candidates from 23,554 recognised secondary schools across Nigeria registered for the examination. This figure includes 12,178 candidates with varying degrees of special needs.
Of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat the exam, 976,787 were male (49.60%) and 992,526 were female (50.40%).
He explained that 1,517,517 candidates, representing 77.06%, had their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 candidates (22.94%) have one or more of their subjects still being processed due to issues that are currently being resolved. He assured that the pending results would be released in the coming days.
Massive Performance Decline in Key Subjects
A notable highlight of the 2025 results is a sharp 33.8% drop in the number of candidates who passed with credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics—WAEC’s benchmark for basic qualification into higher education.
Dangut revealed that 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32% of those who sat the exam, attained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English and Mathematics. This is a steep fall from the 72.12% recorded in 2024.
Of those who met the benchmark this year, 347,192 were male (46.01%) and 407,353 were female (53.99%).
However, when results are considered without the English and Mathematics requirement, a total of 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) secured credit and above in at least five subjects.
WAEC has assured candidates with pending results that efforts are underway to complete the processing, with an update expected within a few days.
