The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted reports suggesting it has commenced arbitrary or indiscriminate promotions of its officers, describing such claims as baseless and misleading. This follows recent online publications alleging that special promotions were being granted without due process.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police condemned what it called a growing wave of lobbying and unofficial requests directed at the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission by officers seeking special promotion.
The Force clarified that recent accelerated promotions were granted to a select number of deserving officers who had demonstrated exceptional performance, bravery, and professional excellence. These promotions, it stressed, were conducted within the framework of a structured reward system developed by police leadership.
“The recent exercise does not signify the commencement of a general or indiscriminate special promotion scheme,” the statement said. “These accelerated promotions were not arbitrary but based on standardized guidelines and verifiable merit.”
The NPF cautioned the public to disregard what it described as “misleading reports sponsored by a particular online platform.” It accused the unnamed platform of spreading falsehoods aimed at undermining the credibility and integrity of the Force’s promotion process.
The Police also issued a stern warning to officers engaging in unethical practices such as lobbying or attempting to influence promotions through unofficial means. According to the Force, such actions run contrary to the principles of meritocracy and professionalism, and would attract strict disciplinary sanctions.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to a promotion system anchored on integrity, verifiable merit, and honourable service to the nation. Officers and men are hereby urged to remain dedicated, maintain discipline, and continue to discharge their duties with pride and distinction,” the statement concluded.
