Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed allegations of admission racketeering in its ongoing 2025/2026 admission exercise, attributing the challenges and frustrations expressed by candidates to the institution’s rising popularity and limited capacity.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, the university noted that it had become the most subscribed university in Nigeria in the 2025 JAMB UTME, recording over 70,000 applicants. With fewer than 20% of this number able to secure admission, LASU said it was inevitable that many otherwise qualified candidates would miss out.
The university stressed that its admission process is strictly merit-driven and guided by law. According to the LASU Law 2004 (as amended), the institution operates a 70:30 admission ratio in favour of Lagos indigenes, after merit-based admissions have been concluded.
“In line with this principle, LASU has offered admission to the highest-scoring candidates across all courses as well as qualified, cleared, and verified indigenes of Lagos State. More admission lists will still be released,” the statement read.
Reacting to social media claims that some staff were selling admission slots, the management insisted that the Vice-Chancellor is the only authority empowered to approve admissions.
“No member of staff has the authority or capacity to offer admission in exchange for money. Anyone making such claims is preying on desperation. Admission into LASU cannot be bought,” the statement emphasized.
While sympathising with candidates who could not secure admission despite strong results, the university urged the public to resist misinformation and advised anyone with verifiable evidence of racketeering to report to complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng.
Management assured that all genuine reports would be investigated and culprits, if any, sanctioned.
Concluding, LASU described its current challenges as “a victim of our own success,” stressing that the overwhelming demand to join its academic community was proof of its growing prestige.
“We are LASU, We are Great,” the statement affirmed.
