Tragedy struck the University of Lagos (UNILAG) community as a student, Damilola Balogun, lost his life during an outing at Eleko Beach, Lagos.
Damilola, a Faculty of Education student, was reported to have drowned on Thursday, September 18, 2025, after a backflip stunt in the water went wrong while he was swimming with friends.
His body was later recovered on Saturday morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from the site of the incident. The discovery was confirmed by a medical doctor and social media user, Dr. Farouk, who first shared news of the tragedy.
The UNILAG Director of Communications, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, in a statement confirmed the development and conveyed the condolence of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, to the bereaved family.
“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of the entire University community, commiserates with his family, and prays that God grants the bereaved family the strength and fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss,” the statement read.
