The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning the state as Africa’s premier leisure and cultural destination, with renewed focus on coastal tourism and strategic hospitality investments.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Chief Executive Officer of AKWAABA Africa Travel Market, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, at Alausa, Ikeja.
She disclosed that construction of 68-bed chalets in Badagry is already underway, describing the project as a major step toward revitalising Lagos’ tourism potential. “These significant projects are a way to reposition Lagos as Africa’s leading destination for tourism and leisure. The chalets will boost Badagry’s potential and brighten the image of Lagos tourism,” Benson-Awoyinka said.
The Commissioner also noted that while Lagos boasts rich natural and cultural attractions, many residents are yet to discover them. She urged Lagosians to explore hidden gems across the state, particularly along the coastline.
Speaking on this year’s World Tourism Day celebration held at Tarkwa Bay Beach, she explained that the choice of venue underscored the state’s renewed attention to beach-related investment opportunities. “Our focus is shifting to the State’s rich beaches with bustling markets and coastal investment growth,” she added.
Ambassador Uko, in his remarks, commended the Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to tourism development, describing the coastal strategy as forward-looking. He applauded the Commissioner’s outreach to Tarkwa Bay and pledged collaboration with the Ministry to sustain growth and attract international visitors.
