The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who led the electoral body for a decade.

His confirmation followed hours of rigorous screening at the Senate plenary, where lawmakers assessed his vision and plans for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

During his presentation, the Kogi-born Senior Advocate of Nigeria pledged to collaborate closely with key institutions, including the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to enhance transparency, credibility, and technological integration in future elections.
