The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of weather conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in some southern states and advising the public to stay alert.
In its three-day weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted slight dust haze with good visibility over parts of Borno, Zamfara, northern Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States on Monday. It also noted that Taraba and Adamawa may experience isolated thunderstorms and light rain later in the day.
Across the North-Central region, NiMet projected sunny skies with patches of clouds, with chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rain over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Kogi States.
For the South, the agency forecast cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains across Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States in the afternoon and evening.
On Tuesday, NiMet said the northern states would continue to experience slight dust haze, while Taraba and Adamawa could see isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. The central states are expected to have sunny skies with intermittent clouds, with possible early morning thunderstorms in Benue and later rainfall in FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi.
The southern region will remain cloudy with moderate rainfall in the morning over Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom, intensifying later in the day. NiMet warned that Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States face a heightened risk of flooding, urging local authorities to activate emergency response plans.
By Wednesday, sunny conditions are expected to dominate the North, though isolated thunderstorms and light rain may occur in Taraba State. The central region will experience sunny skies with cloudy intervals, and light rain is likely in Kogi and the FCT.
In the South, the morning will start cloudy, giving way to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States by afternoon and evening.
NiMet further cautioned motorists against driving through flooded areas and advised people with asthma or respiratory issues to minimize outdoor exposure due to the dust haze in the North.
Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning, while the general public was encouraged to follow NiMet’s updates on its official platforms for real-time information.
