The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has shut down several public toilets across Lagos Island following persistent complaints from residents about offensive odours and poor sanitation practices.

The affected locations include Offin, Balogun, Oke-Arin, and No. 14 Adeniji Adele Road (Olukolu Place). According to the agency, investigations revealed that the facilities were discharging untreated wastewater and violating state environmental laws, which contributed to the spread of waterborne diseases and posed serious public health risks.

In a statement, the LSWMO emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding environmental health, warning that it will intensify enforcement against facilities involved in unlawful waste disposal.

“Lagos State maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for environmental violations,” the agency stated. “Operators of public toilets and residents alike must ensure regular evacuation of septic tanks and soakaways to avoid sanctions.”

The agency assured the public that more inspections and crackdowns will follow to maintain hygiene standards and protect community health.
