Bokku Mart has tendered an apology after a marketing video posted on its social media pages triggered public outrage over perceived ethnic bias.
The uproar followed a promotional clip featuring influencer Defolah, where she used the phrase “No Omo Igbo can cheat me” while advertising discounted prices at the supermarket. The line, widely interpreted as a slur against Nigerians of South-East origin, sparked strong criticism and calls for a boycott of the brand. The video, initially published on Tuesday, was taken down shortly after the backlash.
Defolah has since issued a personal apology, acknowledging that her words were inappropriate.
Responding through a statement released via its official X handle on Friday, Bokku Mart condemned the remark as “unacceptable” and stressed that it does not reflect the values of the company.
“We are deeply saddened by the offensive language used in the video,” the supermarket said. “It does not represent who we are or what we stand for.”
Bokku Mart clarified that the video was produced by an external influencer and uploaded by a third-party media agency without internal approval. However, the company said it fully accepts responsibility for the lapse.
The retailer added that it has now put in place stronger content vetting measures and enhanced oversight of contracted vendors to prevent a repeat occurrence.
Reaffirming its commitment to national unity and respect for cultural diversity, Bokku Mart described itself as a proudly Nigerian brand dedicated to serving all communities without prejudice.
“Our mission is to support and uplift every Nigerian,” the statement read. “We celebrate our country’s diverse heritage and stand firmly against all forms of discrimination.”
