The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Sunday swiftly responded to a tragic accident involving a cyclist and a heavily loaded truck (registration number: BDG 610 YA) at Alausa Bus Stop, near ‘Radio’ by Kudirat Abiola Way, along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the cyclist, while attempting to merge from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way, collided with the moving truck. In the course of the collision, he lost control, struck his head violently against the pavement, and died instantly from the impact.
Eyewitness reports suggest the cyclist was using an earpiece and engaged in a phone conversation at the time of the accident, leading to a fatal lapse in attention on the busy expressway.
LASTMA operatives arrived promptly at the scene to secure the area, ensuring the safety of other road users and maintaining the free flow of traffic. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were immediately alerted and provided necessary assistance.
While managing vehicular movement around the accident site, LASTMA officials handed over the deceased’s remains to the Police, who subsequently conveyed the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated the critical need for strict adherence to road safety regulations.
