The Deeper Life Bible Church has strongly condemned what it described as the unjust demolition of several of its properties across Lagos State by government agencies.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its legal representatives, Nojim Tairu & Co., the church accused state entities of engaging in a systematic campaign of harassment by demolishing its branches in Yaba, Olorunishola, and Lawanson without due process.

The church named the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and the Surulere Local Government as responsible for the actions, which it claimed violated property rights and religious freedom.

“Deeper Life Bible Church, a longstanding pillar of faith and community service with branches throughout Lagos and beyond, strongly condemns the ongoing unjust and unwarranted actions by Lagos State Government agencies,” the statement said. “These agencies have systematically targeted some of the church’s properties and locations.”

The church decried the demolitions as part of a troubling pattern of aggression and said they set a dangerous precedent.

“These aggressive actions not only violate our fundamental rights as a faith community but also undermine justice, religious liberty, and the rule of law,” it added.

Calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to launch an immediate investigation, the church reiterated its commitment to peaceful coexistence and respect for the law. It also urged civil society, other religious organisations, and the international community to stand in solidarity with it.

“We refuse to be intimidated or silenced,” the statement added. “We are prepared to pursue all legal avenues to protect our rights and ensure Deeper Life remains a sanctuary of faith and hope.”

Responding to the allegations, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, denied any government hostility toward the church.

“The Lagos State Government under Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has nothing against Deeper Life. We are close to them and cannot act against their interests,” Omotoso said.

He explained that one of the properties was affected by a local government demolition and not by the state government directly. He also noted that LAMATA, responsible for rail infrastructure, pays compensation when property is affected.

Omotoso confirmed that the issue is under investigation and that the government has initiated dialogue with the church through the Governor’s Special Adviser on Religious Matters (Christian).

“Governor Sanwo-Olu has always run Lagos without discrimination. We regret this incident and are investigating it,” he said.
